After getting through the long, sleepless nights of infancy, the excitement builds to hear your beautiful baby start talking…

You anxiously await for them to turn one…

Then to turn 18 months…

And you start to get worried, wondering why they aren’t talking?

Or maybe they are talking, but just not really a lot —

Or they were talking, but have since regressed, or stopped.

Here are the homeopathic remedies traditionally associated with language delay:

1. Nat Mur

Often in children with missed early vocal milestones who benefit from Nat Mur, there may be issues with being closed off as a whole. It commonly originates from some sort of perceived rejection from mom – such as being dropped off at grandmas house, daycare, etc. They are often so deeply sensitive, to shield themselves they withdraw inward, limit their eye contact, and stop talking. There may also be issues with constipation present.

2. Carcinosin

Whereas Nat Mur is withdrawn and limited eye contact, Carcinosin is nearly the opposite. The children benefitting from this are often very connected to their parents – and want to spend a lot of time with them. They are often very sweet natured children who enjoy reading, exploring nature, etc – but simply are not talking. Other delays may also be present.

3. Cuprum Cum Carcinosin

This is very similar to Carcinosin, except that the child often has very tight or tense muscles. They are sweet, but are prone to being more demanding, rigid, and shrieking/screaming. They are effectively very locked up/controlled, and that extends to their vocal expression also being very locked up.

4. Baryta Carb

Often in Baryta Carb the child has various delays present – may have been delayed in not only talking, but perhaps even crawling and walking. They may have issues swallowing, as their inner organs are very weak functionally. They can typically appear like they are off in a daze, making them very inaccessible as a whole. They may also be very short for their age.

5. Agaricus

This one is big in children with delays who are known to “sing, talk, but do not answer“. They may have a lot of full body restlessness or stimming, and may have a known history of issues with mold.

6. Zincum Met or Phos

In Zincum these children often can have missed early vocal milestones which consist of repeating back everything you say to them, rather than answering. For example, if you ask “what is your favorite color?” Rather than replying and saying something like “blue” they may instead just repeat back to you: “what is your favorite color?” They may have very restless legs and a hard time sitting still. In Zincum Phos (rather than Zincum Met) they may be particularly sweet natured, and have fears of the dark/or other similar fears.

7. Poly Bowel Nosode

For children in which the above do not quite align, but maybe they themselves/and or their mother have a history of extensive gut issues, then it likely comes down to an issue with gut flora. Much research has emerged on the role of gut flora and autism, and in particular L Reuteri and vocal expression. I often suggest this in 200c, melted in water, once per week, and often see incredible outcomes. In children who benefit from this may also want to consider homemade ferments such as sauerkraut, kefir, etc, to boost vocal expression further.

8. Chatterbox Flower Essence

This is a blend that came on my radar in the last few months with soooooooo many anecdotal stories of parents it has helped with their children’s vocal expression. It can be considered in conjunction with any of the above (I usually suggest 2 drops 4x per day, or simply adding 5-6 drops to daily water bottle).
