Constipation: Traditional Homeopathic Supports

Constipation can truly give you the feeling of being bogged down or unable to release, and really it’s just plain uncomfortable!

Here are the homeopathic remedies traditionally associated with constipation:


Safety Note: While we explore traditional support for constipation, persistent constipation accompanied by severe abdominal pain, vomiting, a distended (hard) belly, or an inability to pass gas can be a sign of a bowel obstruction. This is a medical emergency and requires immediate evaluation by a licensed medical professional.


1. Nat Mur:

 This is for constipation which alternates every other day. Stool can be dry, hard, or crumbling, May have a burning sensation in the rectum during or after bowel movements. Emotionally can suffer from depression, or feel melancholy. Typically feel better when skipping meals and worse around 10 am.

2. Alumina:

For when the urging to go is completely absent and can go for days or longer at a time without passing stool. May suffer from memory weakness or forgetfulness.

3. Bryonia:

 Stools will be very dry and are hard to get out. Will pass in lumps and cause headaches due to constipation. Symptoms will be worse with motion and better with pressure. Emotionally can feel very irritable, and interested in business or their career.

4. Lycopodium:

 When constipation includes lots of gas/flatulence. May have pressure in the stomach after eating and hold a bitter taste in the mouth. Symptoms are typically worse between 4 to 8 pm, and are right-sided.

5. Nux Vom:

For constipation with “ineffectual urgings” or straining that doesn’t quite work. Great for those who live a sedentary lifestyle or sit for long periods of time. May be passing stool multiple times a day but will never feel done or effective. Can feel very irritable and also be sensitive to odors, noise or light,

6. Silicea:

For constipation with a lot of straining from a lot of constriction, may also have issues with their skin.
