Oh, coughing.

Yet another major nuisance of being sick.

Is it a dry cough? A rattling cough? A cough at night?

Homeopathy differentiates all of these different things.

Here are the homeopathic remedies traditionally associated with coughs:

Safety Note: While we explore traditional support for coughs, a persistent or barking cough should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. Seek immediate medical care if you notice difficulty breathing, wheezing, or signs of respiratory distress.

1. Antimonium Tart

You know the kind of cough that is really loose, rattling, almost like you’re coughing up a lung with a lot of mucus? Only with this it will be hard to actually get that mucus out. This makes this kind of cough quite miserable with a lot of weakness, and drowsiness.

2. Phosphorus

Usually the kind of cough in which the chest is very tight, and the cough is hard. This will be more of a dry cough that is quite persistent. Laying down can make this cough worse, and can be indicated by having to sit up in bed to cough.

3. Bryonia

Typically a very hard, and very dry cough. Most commonly begins from a cold or illness in which the discharge from the sinuses has moved down. Breathing in or otherwise moving can make this cough worse, making the sufferer hold their chest to try and keep it steady.

4. Drosera

For the kind of cough that is very continuous in nature, or basically coughing episodes. Can be very dry as well, and almost sound like barking. Can be worse at night, coupled with a lot of sweating. Can lead to hoarseness or even loss of voice.

5. Spongia

Another kind of cough similar to Drosera that is very dry and can sound like barking, hacking, or otherwise croupy. With this type the nasal passageways will be very dry, meaning that warm drinks can provide some relief.

6. Conium

This kind of cough is for one that is mostly just worse at night upon laying down. It is associated with dryness, difficulty breathing, and being very continuous making the sufferer have to sit up in bed. With this there may be itching felt in the throat.

7. Ipecac

For a cough in which you feel like you have to cough something up – but can’t. Actually getting any mucus out will be very hard. This can make it feel somewhat hard to breathe, and tight in the chest. There can also be vomiting coupled with this type of tough.

8. Ars Album

This kind of cough is strongly associated with a dry cough that is worse after midnight. There can feel like a constriction of air, and almost like wheezing. There can be a feeling of burning in the chest, coupled with with anxiety or fear.
